DataOps: AI based enterprise

The double loop of data creation and usage within an enterprise. Data are in a continuous flow, once created they are analysed, packaged and drive operation. Artificial Intelligence is being applied more and more, steering the enterprise daily operation. Many enterprise operation experts are pointing to a starting revolution in enterprise organisation based on AI: the DataOps, i.e. operation based on data.

Mind you, every enterprise has been using data from the very beginning, data that were jotted down daily on notebooks using ink and quill. Computers and word processors, Excel, data bases just made the process more efficient. IoTs have multiplied the number of data, digital transactions on the supply/delivery chain have brought real time connection among data owned by different companies… Data analytics have started to make sense of ever growing volume of data and is now being used to help in decision making.

RPA -Robotic Process Automation-  on the shopfloor is using data at a new level, totally operated in the cyberspace with very little, or no, intervention from human operators.RPA is possibly the beginning of a new enterprise paradigm, the one based on DataOps to run more and more enterprise processes autonomously.

This is a change of perspectives: we are shifting from a use of data to feed existing processes to design processes to run on data. These new processes are based on artificial intelligence and as shown in the graphic, created by DataOps unleashed, they create a continuous loop where data are used for the enterprise operation and the operation of the enterprise leads to a continuous tuning of data. The whole occurs behind the perception of workers, hence it becomes crucial to organise the data flow and their execution in a way that can be observed end-to-end by people in charge of the various aspects of the enterprise.

Notice that this is already happening in a number of business. The ticket pricing of airlines changes on the fly, with no intervention from sales managers, depending on market demands and -often- by that particular customer demand. If you want to test this, just initiate the buying of a ticket, then stop and re-initiate the procedure. You’ll notice -often- that the price quoted for that ticked has gone up by a few dollars. Now go to a different computer, not tied to your name, and ask for that same ticket. The price will likely be lower… All of this goes on automatically, based on some general framework that has been defined but whose implementation occurs in total autonomy based on data.

Artificial intelligence is going to drive the enterprise and this will require a re-engineering of most enterprise processes. whilst today we are applying AI to make current processes more efficient.
